Ideal Kiosk Flow
The Blueprint
Each step of the kiosk flow, with do's and don'ts from real deployments. Need help with your menu management setup first? Start there.
Category Structure
6-8 categories max. Scan-friendly names. Margin-first order.
- Max 6-8 top-level categories on the first screen.
- Use clear names: 'Burgers' not 'From the Grill.'
- Put highest-margin categories first (left-to-right, top-to-bottom).
- Use Menu Availability to show different kiosk menus by time of day.
- Don't list 15+ categories. Customers freeze and walk away.
- Don't use creative names that require explanation.
- Don't bury your best sellers in sub-categories.
Item Selection
Curate, don't dump. Kiosk is not your full menu.
- Select only items suited for self-ordering.
- Prioritize: favorites, high-margin items, fast-prep items.
- Use images for every item. Kiosk is visual-first.
- Item descriptions: 1 line max. Clear and scannable.
- Don't put your entire dine-in menu on the kiosk.
- Don't skip images. Text-only kiosk menus underperform by 30%+.
- Don't use long descriptions that push items off-screen.
Modifier Limits
3-5 choices per set. Smart defaults. No nesting.
- Cap modifier choices at 3-5 per set on kiosks.
- Set smart defaults (pre-select the most popular option).
- Use standard modifier sets only for kiosk orders.
- Group modifiers logically: required first, optional second.
- Don't use Pre-Modifiers. They do NOT appear on kiosks.
- Don't nest modifiers (modifier -> sub-modifier). Each extra screen = drop-off.
- Don't offer 10+ options per set. Decision fatigue kills conversions.
Upsell Without Overwhelm
One prompt per order. After item, before cart.
- One upsell prompt per order max (drink, dessert, or size upgrade).
- Place it AFTER item selection, BEFORE cart.
- Make the 'No Thanks' button equally prominent as 'Add.'
- Use high-margin, low-complexity items for upsells.
- Don't prompt upsells on every single item.
- Don't hide the skip/decline option with tiny text.
- Don't upsell complex items that need more modifiers.
Cart -> Pay Flow
Clear summary. Fast payment. Confirmation.
- Show a clear order summary with item names, modifiers, and prices.
- Support Apple Pay, Google Pay, EMV dip, NFC tap, and swipe.
- Send SMS order confirmation to keep the customer informed.
- Use e-receipts to reduce paper and capture contact info.
- Don't skip the summary screen. Customers want to verify before paying.
- Don't limit payment to card-only. NFC/tap is faster.
- Don't forget a 'back' button. Trapped customers abandon orders.
