3 Combo Strategies That Work
Each one lifts average ticket without cutting price. Pick the ones that fit your operation -- especially effective for quick-service restaurants.
The Bundle Play
Pair high-margin items at a fixed combo price.
- Name it clearly: "Lunch Combo: Burger + Fries + Drink" not "Combo #3"
- Set a fixed combo price. No actual discount needed, just perceived value.
- Use revenue classes to track combo sales separately from a la carte.
- In Shift4 Dine: create the combo as a single menu item with its own revenue class and department.
Lunch Combo: Burger + Fries + Drink
Combo Price
$18.99
Perceived savings: $3.51. Actual margin stays the same because fries + drink cost you $1.80 combined.
The Upgrade Path
Turn modifier prompts into natural upsell moments.
- Use modifier sets as upgrade prompts: the POS shows them automatically at order entry.
- Pre-Modifiers with price adjustments handle this natively. Tracked in reports per combo.
- Staff sees the prompt, guest says yes or no. No hard sell needed.
- Name upgrades clearly: "UPGRADE: Premium Side" not "MOD-PS-001"

+$2.50
Average per-ticket lift when upgrade prompts are active. Staff doesn't have to think, the POS prompts them.
The Add-On Stack
Prompt extras after the main item. Small adds, big lift.
- After main item, prompt a modifier set: extra protein, premium topping, dessert.
- Keep add-on sets to 3 to 5 options max. Too many and staff skips the prompt entirely.
- Use Shift4 Dine's course assignment (Appetizer, Entree, Dessert) to fire items in sequence.
- Track add-on performance in reports: quantity, avg price, total revenue per modifier.
Post-Item Add-On Set
Avg Ticket Lift
+$3.10
Average lift per ticket with a 3-5 option add-on set. Keep it short so staff doesn't skip it.
